Yuval Itzhaki:

Heart | Lung
New Music  |  Performance

In the beginning was space with nothing in it.
Since then, it has filled up.
Filled up to the point of bursting, of revulsion,
Flooding the senses, numbing.

Heart | Lung is a solo performance combining acoustic saxophone, installation, and use of unsophisticated electronic instruments.

Itzhaki plays alone in the space he creates. He uses the void to produce sound, resonating with abandoned musical instruments. Heart | Lung is Itzhaki’s journey of exploration, taking up his position vis-à-vis silence, response thresholds, the music of music schools and the music of tradition and the heart, vis-à-vis breathing, war, rage, lamentation, and indifference.

Yuval Itzhaki is a composer and saxophone player. His performance gives room for sound events that traditional performers try to hide and gloss over—sounds of exhalations, breaks and various squeaks. This is his way of giving presence to the visceral experience of playing the instrument.

Itzhaki’s work examines the moment—living, disrupted, and then gone—using relatively few materials, including little illusions and acoustic tricks he places gently and openly enough for us to discern them.I would like to thank all the lecturers at the New Music Department and the school’s technical team for the inspiration, joy and assistance. I am especially grateful to Amir Bolzman, Yoni Niv, Orr Sinay, Dan Weinstein, Ana Wild, Tomer Damsky, and Eran Sachs, who guided and supported me in this project, each in their own way.

Yuval’s solo performance will take place on July 14-15 at 20:00 PM at the Panther Hall, Beit Canadam Shivtei Israel 22 st.
