A pair of amplifiers and a pair of cymbals are arranged on stage, as a tribute to the worlds of guitar-and-drums. Touch speakers (transducers) are attached to the cymbals, transmitting sound through them and turning them into resonant membranes.

Ripples is a musical system. Through real-time control over the intensity of the sonic raw materials and their routing to different elements on stage, the composition is shaped. The act of playing the mixer as a routing instrument is a gesture toward Dub traditions.

In Ripples, sounds echo from a sunken source, finding their place in the world once again, in new ways.

The sonic materials combine granular synthesis, field recordings, and bass guitar recordings that will be reassembled live on stage.

✸ The piece will be performed as part of the New Music Department’s Output Events, on July 23-24. Admission is free with advance registration ‣ Wednesday 23.7 / Thursday 24.7
